STUNNED by Innovation: Shaping the Future of Energy Communities
A collaborative approach to Smart Energy Management
The STUNNED project aims to demonstrate and deploy advanced energy management solutions at the community level. By bringing together residential and industrial buildings into energy communities, it leverages renewable energy sources to balance supply and demand, ensure a stable grid, and enable these communities to play a more active role in energy markets. The project combines technological innovations with tailored business models to maximise the use of renewable energy, reduce overall consumption, improve end-use flexibility through effective incentives, and strengthen the resilience of local grids. Key energy stakeholders, including producers, consumers, aggregators, suppliers, and DSOs, will test and validate energy flexibility solutions in real-world conditions. These solutions include optimising energy storage, managing demand, and actively participating in flexibility markets to drive a sustainable energy future.
Energy Pool as a flexibility enabler for energy communities
With the growing penetration of distributed energy sources, new structures are shaping the energy landscape through the creation of energy communities that integrate their own optimisation functions, such as collective self-consumption of solar energy. Within STUNNED, Energy Pool is responsible for the high-level flexibility valorisation for such communities. Specifically, we will:- Identify for each market (Italy, Spain, and France) the rules, data exchange mechanisms, and value of community flexibility in explicit flexibility markets.
- Contribute to the software architecture for the seamless integration of energy communities across three levels of energy management optimisation.
- Investigate the integration of three French collective self-consumption communities into explicit flexibility markets in alignment with emerging interoperability standards.
Real-World Pilots to Shape the Future of Energy
STUNNED goes beyond theoretical models by developing an integrated hardware and software solution that seamlessly connects the energy management systems of individual players, optimising energy production, consumption, and flexibility services. Over the next four years, these solutions will be tested in real-world conditions across multiple pilot sites—including six residential buildings, one office building, four industrial buildings, and five commercial buildings in Italy, Spain, and France—to demonstrate their impact on energy efficiency, grid resilience, and scalability.By joining this project, Energy Pool reaffirms its commitment to developing innovative solutions for smarter and more sustainable energy management. We strongly believe that energy flexibility will play a crucial role in decarbonising the European power system.
